Advertising Pamphlet, Clydesdale Stud Stallion, ca.1926. The Clydesdale is one of the horse breeds with which the Ontario landscape was broken for European-style agriculture and great importance was placed on the breeding of the perfect specimen. This pamphlet advertises the prize winning stallion Footprint Secundus who was toured through the County of Dufferin in 1926 and could be bred to local mares for a fee. A Century of Gifts. Holiday Treasures Art Show and Sale is a great Dufferin County Tradition but we are hardly the first in the County to celebrate the holidays with art and souvenirs. Various Souvenirs were produced as Christmas collectibles of James J Reith department store in Grand Valley James J Reith Jr. was the son of James J Reith Sr. who opened a department store in the village in 1890. JJ Sr. died in 1905. His son Thomas J took over the business and James Jr. opened a competing operation across the street. He became known as “Jimmy” to distinguish him from his father. Each piece is marked face or back with “Christmas Souvenir, James J Reith”. It is believed these were produced ca. 1907 to 1920. Follow this link to the DCMA Website to see the entire Reith collection, if anyone has another example please contact our staff with a photo to assist with our continuing research.
